A man who was being arrested for shoplifting at a Fred Meyer store in Longview, Washington, cut off the loss prevention officers ear with a hatchet. The security guard, by the name of David Morrison, was arresting an unnamed man who had stolen some bicycle gear, a CD and some motor oil when the suspect produced a hatchet and struck him in the side of the head. The man then fled in a Honda Accord he had borrowed.
Morrison’s condition is not known but he is thought to be in good spirits. Only the lower portion of his ear was severed and it was recovered from the scene. Doctors are trying to reattach it.
The assailant’s name has not been released. The getaway vehicle was found abandoned in the woods.
The suspect is still at large.
