Toronto’s Gay Penguins Find Mates After Being Separated (Video)

If you have been following news from the Toronto Zoo about Buddy and Pedro, this will either delight or depress you.  After being separated out of concerns for preservation of the species, Buddy has mated.  Pedro has not done so yet but he has been trying pretty hard, apparently.  As we reported earlier, Buddy and Pedro are African Penguins and their species in severely in danger.

Buddy and Pedro had been together for a year.  They had shunned any chance to be with female penguins previously and had become quite inseparable.  They had even shared a nest they built together.

According to the zoo curator, Tom Mason, they did not have a sexual relationship but rather a social one.  He says they will most likely stay with their female mates and stay apart.

This is not the only story about gay penguins in recent news.  Two gay penguins in China have adopted a baby penguin which was born as a twin, something dangerous in the penguin world.  Those two penguins had actually tried to steal eggs from other penguin couples.
