1439 – Plymouth, England becomes the first town incorporated by the English Parliament.

1892 – William “Pudge” Heffelfinger becomes the first professional American football player on record, participating in his first paid game for the Allegheny Athletic Association

1912 – The frozen bodies of Robert Scott and his men are found on the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica after their trip to the South Pole.

1954 – Ellis Island, the gateway to America which fueled the growth of New York City and the surrounding area, closes. The first immigrant came through in 1892, a 15 year old named Annie Moore from Ireland.

1970 – The Bhola cyclone hits East Pakistan, becoming the the deadliest tropical cyclone ever, killing 500,000 people.
